Peter Doig's 'Milky Way' (1989–1990) — and his closely related 'Swamped' and 'Hitch-Hiker' — draws on the Scottish-born painter's 1970s Canadian youth. Painted in long, glazed brushwork, a canoe glides across a mirror-still pool beneath a starry sky, the dreamlike image derived from a still in the 1980 horror film 'Friday the 13th'. The oil on canvas is at the Art Institute of Chicago.
