Many Mansions
1994
Kerry James Marshall's 'Many Mansions' (1994), from his landmark 'Garden Project' series, depicts three Black gardeners tending a Chicago public-housing courtyard in which every Black figure is rendered in uncompromising velvety black against a lush cultivated setting. Painted on acrylic on paper mounted on canvas, it insists on Black presence at the centre of American landscape painting. It is a key work of the Art Institute of Chicago's contemporary holdings.
