The Flooded Grave
1998–2000
Jeff Wall's 'The Flooded Grave' (1998–2000) is a large cibachrome transparency in an illuminated lightbox — the Canadian photographer's signature format. A freshly opened grave in a Vancouver cemetery appears inexplicably flooded with sea-water in which living starfish and anemones cling to the walls. Composited from dozens of photographs, the image is one of the iconic lightbox works of contemporary photography, held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
