Leon Golub American, 1922–2004
1981
Leon Golub's 'Interrogation II' (1981) is one of the American painter's monumental 'Mercenaries' and 'Interrogation' canvases that confront state and paramilitary violence. Hooded figures torture a stripped victim on a cold, scraped red ground — Golub's trademark surface, abraded down to the canvas weave. It is a landmark of political painting and held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
