Brushstroke with Spatter
1966
Roy Lichtenstein's 'Brushstroke with Spatter' (1966) is one of his 'Brushstroke' paintings that parodies Abstract Expressionist gesture. A single gestural sweep, rendered in flat Ben-Day dots and a rigid cartoon contour, is flanked by splashes of paint — at once mocking and memorialising the heroic mark of de Kooning and Pollock. Oil and Magna on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
