Spoon Woman
1926–27 (cast 1954)
Alberto Giacometti's 'Spoon Woman' ('Femme-cuillère', 1926–1927) is an early Cubist-Surrealist bronze by the Swiss sculptor. The body of a West African ritual spoon suggested to Giacometti the abstract form of a female torso; the sculpture marks his decisive move from naturalistic modelling toward the reductive language of Paris modernism.
