Steel-Aluminum Plain

1969

Carl Andre's 'Steel-Aluminum Plain' (1969) is a floor sculpture consisting of an interlocking chequerboard of square steel and aluminum plates that the viewer is free to walk over. The plate-floor work is a defining statement of Andre's Minimalism: sculpture as a horizontal ground, physically experienced through the feet. Art Institute of Chicago.
