Kazuo Shiraga's Gutai painting (1966) was produced by the Japanese radical swinging from a rope above the canvas and pushing the paint with his bare feet. Layered sweeps of red, gold, and black record the force and rhythm of that athletic act — a defining method of the postwar Gutai group. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
