Mark Rothko (Marcus Rothkowitz) American, born Russia (Latvia), 1903–1970
Number 19
1949
Mark Rothko's 'No. 19' (1960) is a classic colour-field composition — two soft-edged horizontal rectangles of ember-red and rust on a saturated orange ground. Rothko painted these works to be seen from close range so that the large, 'breathing' colour blocks could fill the viewer's field of vision. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
