Brilliant Yellow #9
1964/65
Jo Baer's 'Radiant Yellow #9' (c. 1966) is a classic hard-edge minimalist canvas: a large white field bordered by a narrow black rim and a thin inner strip of intense yellow. Baer insisted on painting as a fundamentally optical object, and the tense relationship between yellow, black, and white typifies her quiet rigour. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
