Gerhard Richter's 'Ice (1)' ('Eis (1)', 1981), a companion to 'Ice (2)' in the same cycle, likewise translates Antarctic photographs into swept veils of white and cold grey. The pair are among the most important 1980s paintings in the Art Institute of Chicago's contemporary holdings.
