Martin Puryear's 'Sanctum' (1985) is a large organic sculpture in pine, maple, and cherry — a curved, shelter-like form that sits on the gallery floor with the quiet presence of a small hut or prow. Puryear's carefully hand-wrought wood forms fuse the vocabularies of craft, traditional African-American vernacular building, and minimalism. Art Institute of Chicago.
