Night Sky #2
1991
Vija Celmins's 'Night Sky #2' (1991) is a painstakingly rendered painting of a patch of star-filled night sky, the minuscule points of light observed from astronomical photographs and transferred with microscopic discipline to alkyd on canvas. Celmins's ocean, desert, and sky pictures are meditative essays on observation; this example is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
