Alphabet
1959
Jasper Johns's 'Alphabet' (1956) is an encaustic-and-paper work in which the 26 letters of the Roman alphabet are laid out in a grid across the panel — the letters themselves both the subject and the surface, recalling Johns's parallel 'Flags' and 'Targets' in their treatment of familiar signs as pure objects.
