Franz Kline's 'Painting' (1954) is a large black-and-white Abstract Expressionist canvas by the American painter best known for his swift, architectural brushstrokes. Enormous slabs of black sweep across a cream ground in what Kline himself compared to 'signs' or 'sticks of ink'. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
