Chalk-Mirror Displacement
1969
Robert Smithson's 'Chalk-Mirror Displacement' (1969) is an installation of sixteen square mirrors placed in a circle and a mound of powdered chalk poured and scattered between them — a museum transposition of the photographic mapping pieces Smithson was making in English chalk quarries the same year. The work is a central object in the Art Institute of Chicago's holdings of post-minimal and Land Art.
