Gerhard Richter's 'Ice (2)' ('Eis (2)', 1981) is one of his glacier paintings based on photographs from an Antarctic expedition. Swept, partially squeegeed layers of white and grey build a chilly, atmospheric surface that sits between representation and abstraction. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
