Clyfford Still American, 1904-1980
PH-774
1958
Clyfford Still's 'PH-774' (1957) belongs to the major Abstract Expressionist's monumental post-war canvases — jagged 'cliff-edged' fields of umber, black, and yellow torn against each other with palette-knife force. Still's flayed surfaces and uncompromising colour are central to Art Institute of Chicago's post-war collection.
