Supervielle, Large Banner Portrait
1945
Jean Dubuffet's 'Large Portrait Banner of Supervielle' ('Supervielle, grande portrait banniere', 1945) is a rough-surfaced portrait of the poet Jules Supervielle, executed in Dubuffet's 'haute pâte' — paint mixed with sand, coal, and other matter scraped over the canvas. A key early statement of Dubuffet's Art Brut. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
