Hans Hofmann American, born Germany, 1880-1966
Blue Rhythm
1950
Hans Hofmann's 'Blue Rhythm' (1950) is a dense gestural abstraction by the German-American painter who was one of the key teachers of New York Abstract Expressionism. Blocks of cobalt blue punctuate a loose all-over field, demonstrating Hofmann's famous 'push-pull' theory of colour space. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
