Towards Identity

Nelson Stevens's 'Towards Identity' (1970) is a large acrylic painting by the founding member of AfriCOBRA, the Black-nationalist artists' collective formed in Chicago in 1968. Stevens's characteristic 'super-real' colours and bold African-inspired patterning centre the face of a woman as an emblem of Black consciousness. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
