Inventions of the Monsters
1937
Salvador Dalí's 'Invention of the Monsters' (1937), painted on the eve of the Second World War, was begun in Semmering in Austria shortly after Freud visited Dalí. Lovers, hybrid beasts, and a crumbling Spanish landscape populate one of Dalí's most apocalyptic canvases. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
