Juan Gris Spanish, 1887–1927
Portrait of Pablo Picasso
January–February 1912
Juan Gris's 'Portrait of Pablo Picasso' (1912), painted by the young Spanish Cubist in his first full year in Paris, is a homage to his older compatriot constructed from silvery facets of Analytical Cubism. Gris's signature diamond-grid planes and his dedication 'Hommage à Pablo Picasso' at the top of the canvas confirm the sitter. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
