Piet Mondrian Dutch, 1872–1944
Lozenge Composition with Yellow, Black, Blue, Red, and Gray
1921
Piet Mondrian's 'Lozenge Composition with Yellow, Black, Blue, Red, and Gray' (1921) tilts his signature Neoplastic grid 45 degrees so that the canvas meets the wall as a diamond. Black bars divide the tilted field into primary rectangles — a rigorous experiment in the shape of the support itself. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
