Golden Bird

1919/20 (base c. 1922)

Constantin Brâncuși's 'Golden Bird' (1919–1920) is one of the Romanian-French sculptor's radically simplified birds, carved in polished bronze and balanced on a stone and stepped oak base. Its sweeping, elongated silhouette — all wing and upward flight — distils the formal vocabulary that Brâncuși spent his career refining. The sculpture is a cornerstone of the Art Institute of Chicago's modern sculpture collection.
