Chilean-born Surrealist Roberto Matta's 'The Earth is a Man' (1942) is one of his early cosmic 'inscapes' — a seething, molten fantasy landscape painted in New York during his American exile. The work would prove a direct influence on Abstract Expressionists like Pollock and Gorky. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
