Fisherman's Cottage
1906
Harald Sohlberg's 'Fisherman's Cottage' (1906) is one of the most reproduced paintings of Norwegian late-Romantic symbolism: a single red timber cabin stands before a still northern sea beneath a silver, almost supernatural dusk. Sohlberg's careful outlines and jewel-clear colour give the modest subject a haunting stillness that became the emblematic image of the 'Norwegian night'. The canvas is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
