Woman before an Aquarium
1921–23
Henri Matisse's 'Woman before an Aquarium' (1921–1923) shows a young woman in a flowered dress leaning her elbows on a table, chin on clasped hands, gazing into a small round fish tank. The Nice-period palette of peach and apple-green, and the quiet domestic reverie, make the picture one of Matisse's finest interwar interiors. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
