Piet Mondrian Dutch, 1872–1944
Farm near Duivendrecht
c. 1916
Piet Mondrian's 'Farm near Duivendrecht' (c. 1905–1907) predates his Neoplastic grids: a low Dutch farmhouse reflected in still water beneath a luminous evening sky, rendered in the moody Symbolist naturalism of the young Mondrian who had not yet abandoned representation. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
