The Praying Jew

1923

Marc Chagall's 'The Praying Jew (Rabbi of Vitebsk)' (1914) is a Russian-Jewish religious portrait by the artist painted in the year he returned from Paris to his native Vitebsk. Wrapped in a black-and-white prayer shawl and tefillin, the old man embodies the Yiddish piety of Chagall's childhood. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
