The Philosopher's Conquest
1913–14
Giorgio de Chirico's 'The Philosopher's Conquest' (1913–1914) belongs to his 'metaphysical' series: an empty Italian piazza populated by a pair of artichokes, a clock, a puffing locomotive, and two impossibly long cannon barrels. The dreamlike, theatrical stillness provided direct inspiration to the Surrealists a decade later. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
