Fernand Léger French, 1881–1955
Reclining Woman
1922
Fernand Léger's 'Reclining Woman' (1921) is a classic example of his 'mechanical' period: a figure reduced to tubular limbs and flat geometric planes against a background of industrial-pattern wallpaper. Painted after his First World War service, it marked Léger's lifelong fusion of the human body with the rhythms of modern machine civilisation. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
