Houses at Chatou
1905
Maurice de Vlaminck's 'Houses at Chatou' (1905) is an early Fauve landscape from Vlaminck's intense collaboration with André Derain in the western Paris suburb of Chatou on the Seine. Red roofs, tangerine walls, and flame-blue shadows are laid down in raw parallel strokes — a paradigmatic product of the summer of 1905 when Fauvism exploded onto the French scene. The painting is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
