Franz Marc German, 1880–1916
The Bewitched Mill
1913
Franz Marc's 'The Enchanted Mill' ('Die Verzauberte Mühle', 1913) is a late German Expressionist landscape by the co-founder of the Blaue Reiter group. Intersecting blue, red, and green geometric planes transform an Alpine mill into a near-abstract spiritual landscape — realised just months before Marc was killed at Verdun in 1916 at the age of 36. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
