The Waterfall

1910

Henri Rousseau's 'The Waterfall' (1910), painted in the last year of the self-taught Parisian master's life, depicts a pair of tiny Indigenous figures at the foot of a tropical waterfall, the jungle built up leaf by leaf in Rousseau's signature Naïve clarity. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
