On the Threshold of Liberty
1937
René Magritte's 'On the Threshold of Liberty' ('Au seuil de la liberté', 1930) is one of his great theatrical paintings, a room opening onto a grid of nine window-like panels — each showing a different image (cloud, forest, nude, bells) — while a cannon points into the gallery. A classic Magritte meditation on framing and perception. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
