Joan Miró's 'Policeman' (1925) belongs to his first Surrealist breakthrough year, when the Catalan painter began to populate his canvases with biomorphic glyphs. A spindly armed figure with a large moustache stalks across a washed-blue ground — Miró's irreverent version of 1920s Paris authority. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
