Sleeping Muse

1910

Constantin Brâncuși's 'Sleeping Muse' (c. 1910) is a bronze head reduced to an egg-shaped oval lying on its side, the features smoothed into a near-abstract harmony of volume and line. The work is one of the pivotal sculptures of Brâncuși's famous move toward pure form; the Art Institute of Chicago holds an authorised cast.
