The Circus Rider
c. 1927
Marc Chagall's 'The Circus Rider' (1925–1931) is one of the Russian-French painter's beloved circus subjects. A woman in a pink tutu balances on a flying white horse while angels and fiddlers wheel around her, an early form of Chagall's lifelong 'circus as fable' iconography. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
