Amedeo Modigliani Italian, 1884–1920
Jacques and Berthe Lipchitz
1916
Amedeo Modigliani's 'Jacques and Berthe Lipchitz' (1916) is a double portrait of the sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and his wife Berthe Kitrosser, painted in Paris during the First World War. Modigliani's elongated necks and almond eyes turn the pair into an almost Byzantine double icon of the Parisian School. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
