Ferdinand Hodler Swiss, 1853–1918
Day (Truth)
1899
Ferdinand Hodler's 'Day (Truth)' ('Der Tag / Wahrheit', 1899–1903) is a monumental Symbolist panel by the Swiss painter. A standing nude woman opens her arms toward the viewer in a gesture of revelation, flanked by a procession of smaller figures — one of Hodler's 'parallelist' compositions linking individual body to collective rhythm. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
