Raymond Duchamp-Villon French, 1876–1918
Horse
1914
Raymond Duchamp-Villon's 'The Horse' (1914, cast later) is a key sculpture of early Cubism: a rearing horse reconceived as a dynamic assemblage of mechanical cylinders and gear-like planes, merging animal and machine. The sculpture was Duchamp-Villon's major pre-war achievement before his early death in 1918. Bronze, Art Institute of Chicago.
