Forest and Sun
1927
Max Ernst's 'The Forest and the Sun' (1927) belongs to his Surrealist 'Forest' cycle of the late 1920s. Using 'grattage' — scraping paint across textures laid behind the canvas — Ernst conjures dense, fossilised forests lit by a cold, ringed sun. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
