Homage to the Romantic Ballet
1942
Joseph Cornell's 'Homage to the Romantic Ballet' (c. 1940s) is one of his small jewel-box assemblages: panes of blue glass, printed paper cut-outs of 19th-century ballerinas, and tiny galactic charts, all hermetically arranged behind the glass front. A private shrine to Cornell's lifelong romance with Taglioni, Cerrito, and the Romantic ballet tradition. Art Institute of Chicago.
