Maquette for Richard J. Daley Center Sculpture
1964
Pablo Picasso's 'Maquette for Richard J. Daley Center Sculpture' (1964) is the small steel model for the monumental 15-metre 'Chicago Picasso' unveiled in Daley Plaza in 1967 — a gift from the artist to the city of Chicago. Combining cubist faceting with simplified organic curves, the figure (variously read as a woman's head, a dog, or an Afghan hound) marked a turning point for public abstract sculpture in America.
