Laurette with a Cup of Coffee
1916–17
Henri Matisse's 'Loretta with a Cup of Coffee' (c. 1916–1917) belongs to a series the painter devoted to his Italian model Laurette during the First World War, when he experimented with flattened space and a darker, more austere palette. The single warm terracotta of the coffee cup accents the cool indigo-green of the sitter's dress. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
