1915
Amedeo Modigliani's 'Madame Pompadour' (1915) is a portrait of Modigliani's partner and patroness, the English poet Beatrice Hastings, given the satirical title of Louis XV's favourite mistress. The painter's elongated neck, masked face, and empty almond eyes are sharply in place. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
