Girl in Yellow and Blue with Guitar
1939
Henri Matisse's 'Girl with Guitar (Yellow and Blue)' ('Jeune fille à la guitare, jaune et bleu', c. 1939) depicts a young woman in a yellow blouse and blue skirt strumming a guitar. Painted in Nice as war loomed over Europe, the picture retreats into quiet domestic music-making rendered in Matisse's flattened decorative planes. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
