René Magritte Belgian, 1898–1967
Untitled (Woman-Bottle)
c. 1943
René Magritte painted 'Untitled (Woman-Bottle)' (1940s–1950s) directly onto a wine bottle, transforming its surface into a reclining nude who curves around the cylinder. A playful, intimate Surrealist object, one of several bottle-paintings by Magritte; the example in the Art Institute of Chicago is among the finest in any American collection.
