Max Ernst's 'Spanish Physician' ('El Médico Español' / 'The Spanish Doctor', 1940) is a nightmarish Surrealist canvas painted as Ernst was interned by the French as an enemy alien during the Second World War. Writhing hybrid creatures surround a central 'doctor' figure in a landscape of frottage textures. Oil on canvas, Art Institute of Chicago.
